Starting with the surgery, Varicose veins can often be large and unsightly, which may prompt the need for surgery. This type of surgery is usually done in an operating room under general anesthesia. If both legs are affected by varicose veins, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for a day following the surgery. Recovery time for this procedure is generally longer as compared to other treatments.
1) Vein stripping and ligation
This surgical procedure involves making one incision near the patient’s groin, at the top of the affected vein. Another incision is made down the leg, either at the ankle or knee. The top of the vein is then tied off and sealed.
A thin wire is then threaded through the bottom of the vein, and the affected vein is pulled out. This procedure may sometimes cause bruising, pain, and bleeding. Recovery time after surgery can be lengthy, plus patients are advised to wear compression stockings during this time. [1]
2) Foam sclerotherapy
The affected veins are injected with a foam solution in this procedure. This solution causes the veins to become irritated and scarred, eventually closing them off. This is a treatment method used for large varicose veins. [2]
3) Phlebectomy
In this procedure, the specialist uses an endoscopic transilluminator – a special light, which is inserted through small cuts so that the specialist can see which vein needs to be taken out. The affected veins are cut and removed with a suction device. It may be done alone or with vein stripping. After this procedure, there are chances that the patient may experience some bleeding and bruising. [3]
4) Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy
Endovenous laser ablation is a new, minimally-invasive technique used to treat varicose veins. Rather than tying and removing the affected veins, the laser is used to heat them. The laser is a highly focused beam of light that damages the vein and forms scar tissue. This scar tissue destroys the abnormal veins. This procedure can be carried out at the specialist’s clinic rather than an operating theater, resulting in a shorter recovery time. It is also more effective compared to vein surgery, but there are chances of burns and marks on the skin. [4]
If you as a patient are scared thinking about all these treatments, let me know help you get a sigh of relief by Coming to the last and the most effective treatment for Varicose Veins, is the minimally Adhesive treatment:
Adhesive Treatment is the only minimally invasive procedure that does not require heat to treat the affected veins. In this therapy, a medical adhesive (glue) is used to close the affected vein. So this procedure is carried out in 4 simple steps,
