To start with, Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that can cause discomfort and pain, especially in the legs. They are a common condition, affecting up to 7% of adults in India. [1] They usually occur due to a lot of reasons, be it because of sedentary lifestyle, being obese, regular habit of smoking, family history, lack of movement, pregnancy and much more!

Talking about its treatment…In the past, surgery was the only option for treating varicose veins. However, there are now several minimally invasive treatments available that are highly effective, such as the adhesive treatment.

The minimally adhesive treatment involves using medical adhesive to close the affected vein. A catheter is inserted into the vein, and the adhesive is delivered through it, sealing the vein shut. The procedure takes about an hour and can be done under local anesthesia. In Minimally adhesive treatment, there is only one, or very few number of surgical pricks involved as compared to other treatments, in terms of post – surgical care, there is no requirement of compression stockings as such! Talking about the period of recovery, one can recover on the same day as that of the treatment. Lastly, this treatment is not surgical and no sedation is required. Patients can go home the same day and are usually back to their normal activities within a few days.

Now you might be thinking, this sounds like a very simple and convenient treatment. But let us tell you, you can now get the minimally adhesive treatment in India as well! Although it has been used successfully in other parts of the world for several years, now it is carried out in our country as well! [2]

There are several benefits to the adhesive treatment. First, it is minimally invasive, which means less pain, scarring, and a shorter recovery time. Second, it is highly effective, with a success rate of more than 95%. Third, because it does not involve heat or other forms of energy, there is a reduced risk of nerve damage or skin burns. [3]

Minimally invasive procedures cause less discomfort to the patients. Also, most of the patients do not require compression stockings afterward. The treatment has a shorter recovery time allowing patients to resume their normal activities right away! And since the procedure does not involve heat, there is no risk of burns or nerve damage. [4]

But let us tell you, like any medical procedure, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of. These can include bruising, swelling, and discomfort at the site of the treatment. However, these are usually mild and go away within a few days.

If you have Varicose Veins or if you want to know if this treatment is suitable for you or not, then the best way is to see a vascular surgeon who can evaluate your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
